Variable-Speed Brushless DC Generators – by Glacier Bay
Glacier Bay’s unique high power density generators are smaller, lighter, quieter, and more efficient than comparable conventional generators. They incorporate over two decades of Glacier Bay’s pioneering high-efficiency power management technology originally developed for NASA, the Department of Energy (DOE), and the Defense Advanced Research Products Agency (DARPA).
The keys to the generator’s high performance are its intelligent controllers, high-efficiency permanent magnet generator head, and active rectification boost module. Conventional generators run at a constant speed and require large, heavy engines which are oversized for the load in order to survive the harsh task of operating with light loads for extended periods. Constant speed engines operate inefficiently when partially loaded, requiring a separate generator to closely match each load. Glacier Bay’s generator incorporates intelligent controllers that vary engine speed depending on the load, enabling the generator to produce comparable power levels from a significantly smaller and more efficient engine, and to operate reliably at high efficiency over a wide power range.

The smaller engine is lighter, takes up less space, uses less fuel, generates fewer pollutants, and is quieter than those in conventional generators. The generator is up to 18% more efficient generating AC and 40% more efficient generating DC relative to traditional generators. The benefits of load-following technology have been known for decades, but it took Glacier Bay–calling on years of system engineering, controls, and power electronics experience–to design the innovative controllers necessary to fully utilize the inherent benefits of load-following generators.
In addition to offering superior weight, size, and performance benefits, a single Glacier Bay generator can meet a range of different power needs, saving you the multiple SKU’s you would have to assort using conventional technology. Wouldn’t you rather use one product to meet a variety of needs, than have to stock numerous products and spare parts?
The future of mobile power is Glacier Bay.
